Years ago I saw a guy wearing a t-shirt with the words “Comic Sans must die”. Designers the world over will agree, but another font that is as popular as it was more than fifty years ago, is trusty Helvetica. In fact, it is the most widely used font ever and it is even the subject of its own movie.
The appeal for a distinctive, professional and timeless typeface has never dwindled. Helvetica keeps gaining more followers day by day, and it’s easy to understand why. It has helped to drive sales for car brands Jeep, GM and Toyota; it has been the talk of the town for communication brand Skype, and it has given wings to Lufthansa’s logo. But seriously – bad play on words aside – it is clear Helvetica’s use in identities throughout the world remains as strong as ever. Love it or hate it, with its multitude of styles and versions, I believe Helvetica is here to stay.
